Frequently asked questions

What image formats are supported?

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, ICO and SVG are detected from the data itself and previewed. TIFF, HEIC and JPEG XL are recognized too; if your browser cannot display one (most browsers other than Safari cannot show TIFF or HEIC), you can still download it.

Do I need the "data:image/..." prefix?

No. The tool accepts full data URLs and raw Base64 strings, including URL-safe Base64 (with - and _) and strings without = padding or split across lines. It also finds a data URL inside quotes, an HTML img tag, a CSS url() or a JSON string, so you can paste a line straight from code, and URL-encoded SVG data URLs (data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg...) work too.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Decoding happens entirely in your browser - the Base64 string is never transmitted to any server.

How do I get the original file size?

The decoded file size is shown under the preview, after the image format and dimensions. It is roughly three quarters of the Base64 string length, since Base64 encoding adds about 33%.

Can I download the decoded image?

Yes. Download saves it named after its dimensions, for example image-1600x1000.jpg - or just image.tiff, image.heic and so on when your browser cannot display it. The file extension matches the format detected in the data, even when the data URL declares a different type.
