Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Words are found with your browser's built-in Unicode word segmentation, so punctuation and a dash standing between spaces are not counted, while contractions like "don't", numbers like 3.14, and hyphenated words like "state-of-the-art" each count as one word. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese, are split into individual words rather than counted as one long word.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is based on an average reading speed of 238 words per minute, a commonly cited figure for adult silent reading of general text.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both - the Characters card shows the count with spaces, and the figure without spaces underneath it. "Without spaces" leaves out every kind of whitespace: spaces, tabs, line breaks, and non-breaking spaces. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji such as 👍 or 👨👩👧 or an accented letter counts as one character.
How are paragraphs and lines counted?
A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by at least one blank line, so a single line break does not start a new paragraph. Lines counts every line the way a text editor numbers them, blank lines included.
Is my text sent to a server?
All counting happens locally in your browser. No text is transmitted or stored.
