Frequently asked questions

What categories of units are supported?

Five: temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, Rankine), length (millimeters to kilometers, inches to miles, and nautical miles), weight (milligrams to metric tons, ounces, pounds and stone), volume (milliliters to cubic meters, and US teaspoons to gallons) and speed (m/s, km/h, mph, knots, ft/s and Mach).

How is temperature conversion different from other conversions?

Most unit conversions use simple multiplication. Temperature scales (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, Rankine) have different zero points, so converting between them also needs an offset. A value below absolute zero (0 K, −273.15 °C, −459.67 °F) is flagged, since no real temperature can be that low.

Is my data sent to a server?

All conversion runs locally in your browser. No data is transmitted anywhere.

How precise are the results?

Every unit except Mach uses its exact legal definition - for example 1 lb = 453.59237 g and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L - so 1 cup is exactly 16 tablespoons. Results are rounded to 12 significant digits (every whole-number digit is kept), which hides floating-point rounding errors. Mach uses the sea-level speed of sound in the standard atmosphere, 340.29 m/s; the real value varies with temperature and altitude.

Can I convert between metric and imperial units?

Length, weight, volume and speed include both metric and US customary units, so you can convert kilometers to miles, kilograms to pounds, liters to gallons, and so on. The customary volume units are US measures - a UK imperial gallon or pint is about 20% larger.
