Frequently asked questions

Can I change where numbering starts?

Yes - the Start at field accepts any whole number from 0 to 1,000,000, so numbering can begin at 0, 1, 100, or wherever your excerpt starts.

What separators can I use?

Choose from five preset styles: dot (1.), colon (1:), pipe (1 |), dash (1 -), or two spaces. The separator is placed between the number and the line text.

Is my text sent to a server?

All processing happens in your browser. No text is transmitted or stored.

Can I add line numbers to code?

Paste any plain text including source code. The numbers are prepended to each line as plain text, and Align numbers (on by default) right-aligns them with leading spaces so the code stays lined up. Long lines scroll sideways instead of wrapping, so every visible line starts with its number. Blank lines are numbered too, but a newline at the very end of the text does not create an extra numbered line.

What does the step option do?

Step controls the increment between line numbers, from 1 to 1,000. Starting at 10 with a step of 10 produces 10, 20, 30… which is common in BASIC-style code listings.
